Women also speak more quickly, devote more brainpower to chit-chat - and actually get a buzz out of hearing their own voices, a new book suggests.
After I have a conversation with one of my male friends, Sybil always asks what we talked about. I always say, "Nothing." I knew I was right. This explains the frustration Sybil has with me because she feels I don't tell her anything. I can't get a word in edge-wise.

ah yes, it also explains how women complain that men "never get the details" Turns out we just want the facts, they want the "back story"
Yes, I realized something similar. When I stopped talking no talking occurred between W and me. So I guess I was doing most if not all the talking before. It's very quiet in our house these days. It's driving me crazy. Don't suppose W cares, or maybe it's even a relief to him.
joe flirt-
Not getting the details is a running arguement with Sybil and me. I don't care about the details. I don't want to bogged down with the details.

I'm sorry for the silence in your house. I don't mind meaningful conversations with Sybil. Unfortunately, the conversations tend to turn into a way to critisize me for something. Actually, silence always gets my alarms going.
Have you read, "The Five Love Languages?" If she talks all the time and complains that you don't talk enough, that could be an indication that her Love Language (the most effective way she gives and recognizes love) is encouraging words.
Just my two cents.
hahaha so so true.
""But, of course, it has been said that women only talk twice as much as men because we constantly have to repeat what we said to them as they don't listen!""
I had to point that out....lol
Have a great day!!!

You might be right about her love language. None of us get it right all of the time. We just have to keep trying.

Thought so.

I know many women feel they are constantly repeating themselves. Men have a hard time separating the wheat from the straw, at least for I do. I'll admit to sometimes losing the important stuff in the static.
Women talk three times as much as men?
Color me shocked.
"Speak more quickly and devote more brainpower to chit-chat."
Yup, that about sums it up. But strangely enough, there are often awkward silences when I WANT to be conversing, but as soon as I have something I want to do (watch TV, read a book, etc), the "idle chit-chat" opens up.

I've wondered about that silence. Is it like when the TV is turned off, and the silence becomes oppressive. Not really a bad thing but takes getting used to.
Experts in speech and language have known this for years. Or at least I first heard it over 10 years ago from communication disorders PhD. And he said that the reason was largely evolutionary. Women provide a larger body of language for youngsters with all that chit-chat. He said if it were up to men only, kids might not learn to talk until they were 5!
So yes, women are designed differently and it serves an important function. And consider this: women mediate their emotions through (spoken) language while men mediate theirs through...sex? 30 minutes of conversation for 30 minutes of sex sounds like a fair trade to me!

It's interesting that we have to have these "scientific" studies to show us what we already knew: men and women are different.
